Goodguys 21st Southwest Nationals Photo Highlights

Last weekend’s 21st Southwest Nationals blanketed Westworld of Scottsdale with a tapestry of colors and chrome. The Goodguys season finale was like a celebration, bringing together the best cars and the best builders hot rodding has to offer.

For starters, the event gathers the Goodguys Top 12 Cars of the Year. From Hot Rods to Street Machines to customs to AutoCross racers, they all took their rightful place in the special exhibit atop flooring from RaceDeck and custom tool boxes from Snap-on. The fans flocked to see the best of the best up close.

On the western side of the upper paddock, 32 AutoCross racers from around the country threw it down in the Goodguys Duel in the Desert. The National lineup of fast guys put on a show that won’t soon be forgotten. After a day and a half of qualifying and hot laps, eliminations commenced early Saturday afternoon. Scott Fraser, driving Bruce Cambern’s 1966 427 Cobra (a real one, not a replica), defeated defending champion Robby Unser for the title. It was Fraser’s turn to win after four years of trying. He collected a $3,000 check but more importantly, the undisputed title of “AutoCrosser of the Year.”

Car wise, the Southwest Nationals had nearly 3,500 entries sprawled across Westworld’s massive polo field and festival lots. Dean Livermore of Hot Rods by Dean had the unenviable task of picking the Top 10 cars. With the quality of cars entered, he could have picked 100.

The fully-stocked swap meet lined the paved polo field perimeter. The vendor midway was stacked with heavy hitters. There was gourmet food, there was happy hot rodders and wide smiles around every corner.
